Classroom Snack System
In our classroom we will use a slightly different system for snack time than you may be used to. Below, I will explain how it works, and hopefully, answer any questions you may have.
At the beginning of every month I will ask each family in my class to provide one class-sized set of snacks (enough for about 22 kids). The snacks will then be combined in one large “snack tub” that your child will be able to choose their snack from each day. Preferably, the snacks should be individually wrapped for convenience, but you may also provide one large bag or box of some type of snack and I can divide it at snack time.
This type of snack program is found to be a big hit with students and parents! Parents appreciate only having to think about their child’s daily snack once a month, and the kids love it because they have such a large variety of foods to choose from each day.
This type of program also makes it easier for teachers to monitor the types of snacks that come into our room to ensure that they are all peanut-free. The beginning of the year is confusing enough for our kindergarten kiddos, and I feel that this program alleviates some of the problems we may encounter, such as days that your child may forget their snack, or accidentally eat it at lunch time.
I will keep track of who sends snacks in on a checklist in my classroom. I will put reminders about sending snack sets in my newsletters, and may send snack reminders home if it has been a long time since your family provided a set.
Nearly any type of snack can be sent in, although we do request that the snacks be as healthful as possible (no chips, candy, candy bars, etc), and prefer that they be individually wrapped for convenience and sanitation. ALSO: PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY SNACKS CONTAINING PEANUT PRODUCTS, AS WE MAY HAVE A CHILD WITH A PEANUT ALLERGY IN OUR CLASSROOM! I will check all snacks sent in for peanut products, but please don’t send anything with peanuts or peanut butter!
Suggested Snacks that are a “hit” with a Kindergartner!!
- 100 calorie packs of any sort
- flavored rice cakes (one for each child is plenty)
- cheez-it crackers
- vanilla wafers
- regular or cinnamon graham crackers
- applesauce cups (spoons are appreciated)
- flavored fig Newton cookies (yes, I am serious!)
- pudding cups (spoons are appreciated)
- animal crackers
- a box of cereal
- granola bars (no peanut butter please)
- fruit snacks (these are a huge hit)
- teddy grahams (any flavor)
- pretzels
- Individually wrapped rice-krispie treats
